Study in a global media and financial capital

As a one of the world’s leading media hubs, London is the perfect place to study Crisis Reporting. The Reuters, AP, the BBC, CNN, and many others either have their headquarters or major bureaux here. The city is home to people from across the world, and City, University of London’s central location means that you will be at the heart of this exciting and busy cultural and commercial metropolis.

To study Journalism at City is to study in a department that counts leading international and British journalists among its alumni. They frequently return to share their expertise at events organized at the university.

You will be joining a department of more than 250 postgraduate Journalism students from across the world studying a range of different courses. The strength of City’s Journalism degrees lies in their combination of academic excellence and professional-standard practice. The majority of the teaching staff have themselves worked in senior roles as correspondents and editors at news organizations such as the BBC, Reuters, and others. Their experience of working in an industry shaped by technological, economic, and political change—combined with their academic research—makes them the perfect tutors for the Crisis and Conflict specialisation.

Subject to approval from tutors, there may also be opportunities to attend classes not formally part of the Mundus programme. Your dissertation project—the main focus of your final semester—will require you to produce both an academic paper, and a substantial piece of original journalism: an excellent opportunity to showcase the scholarly and journalistic skills you have acquired during your time as a Mundus Journalism student.

With the exception of the Master's Dissertation module, all modules which students take at City, University of London are elective. The choices are:

Data Journalism

Fundamentals of Financial Journalism

Journalism Ethics

Humanitarian Reporting

Reporting the Middle East

Reporting Science and Health

International News

Security and Crime

Political Reporting

Audio Production (Podcasting)

Conflicts and the Media

This digest of modules reflects the fact that global crisis encompasses conflicts, political, natural disasters, financial and health crisis.

In addition to your selection of taught modules, you will also complete a Master's Dissertation. Reflecting City University Journalism Department’s emphasis on both top-level journalistic practice and academic excellence, this usually takes the form of a piece of long-form journalism and a related academic reflection paper. Students also have the option of submitting a piece of academic research on a relevant topic.
