How to apply to the Mundus Journalism programme

The call for applications for the 2020-2022 programme is closed. We will launch the call for the 2021-2023 programme 1 of November 2020.

A step-by-step application guide

In order to make the application process as smooth as possible, you can find each step explained below. In the flow diagram, you can get an overview of the process and in the boxes below, you will get detailed information about each of the documents required in the application package. Further below, you will find information about submission and the admission result.  

You apply for admission to the Mundus Journalism programme and for a Mundus scholarship within the same application process.

How to arrange the application package (PDF)

The required documents described in the boxes below must be arranged in the application package in this specific order:

1. Application Form

The application form should be the first document within your application package. That will give the Consortium's Selection Committee an overview of your personal and academic background and your application reflections before they consider all your supporting documents.

Within the application form, you will find a section called Application Reflections.These reflections are related to your academic and journalistic past as well as your future career expectations. Though short, your answers will be evaluated by the Consortium not only on content but also on writing style, quality and clarity. 

2. Academic documents

Please include official graduation certificates and transcripts from all your previous university/college studies. Transcripts should provide full details of the degree class and grades you received in each unit or module.

All transcripts or academic records must be official documents provided in the original language. If these documents are not in English, they must be accompanied by translations into English. Diplomas and transcripts must always be translated into English and certified by either your home institution or a certified translator. 

3. Journalistic documents

Proof of experience

In order to provide proof of your work as a professional journalist, your current or previous employer needs to supply a signed document that states the employment period. This information can also be included within the  journalistic reference letter.

Work samples

Please submit three articles or other samples of your journalistic work, preferably in English. You can include links instead if your work is available online. Do not submit more than three articles or equivalent.

If your samples are not in English, please include a short English summary (you are welcome to make that summary yourself).

If your journalism work samples cannot be included in a PDF file (e.g. radio or TV samples on cd/dvd), please include detailed information on your samples and links if possible. If needed, the Mundus Consortium might ask you to forward these samples by postal mail.

4. Language documents

Please include a scan of your English proficiency test if you are not a native English speaker

We require evidence of English language proficiency if you are not a native English speaker*.

We accept these tests:

  • IELTS Academic test with a band score of 7,0 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each category**
  • TOEFL internet-based test with a score of at least 100***
  • Cambridge ESOL exams: Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) or Certificate in Advanced English with the grade A or at least 190 points on the Cambridge English-scale**** 

*  We consider applicants to be native English speakers if they come from any of these countries: Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; The Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Canada; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Ireland; Jamaica; New Zealand; St Kitts and Nevis; St Lucia; St Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; United Kingdom; United States of America

**  The IELTS report should be scanned in a high-quality resolution, so that the TRF number can be read clearly in order for Aarhus University to verify the result.

*** Before taking the TOEFL test you must select Aarhus University as receiver of your TOEFL test results. Aarhus University TOEFL-code is 8935. Failure to do so may result in a rejection of your TOEFL test results. If you have already taken the test, please contact the test centre in order for them to add Aarhus University’s TOEFL-code 8935 to your test.

**** If you take a Cambridge ESOL exam, please share your results with Aarhus University through the Candidate Results Website ( You log on by using your ‘Candidate ID’ and ‘Secret Number’, which you get from the test center. Failure to share your test results through the Candidate Results Website may result in a rejection of your Cambridge ESOL test results.

5. Curriculum Vitae

Please provide us with a Curriculum Vitae (CV). The CV should be no more than 2 pages.

A CV (or résumé in the US) is a concise summary of your skills, achievements and interests inside and outside your academic work. 

List your experience and key dates, including educational achievement, work experience, prizes, awards, involvement in societies, sports and clubs and your other interests and skills (e.g. languages and IT skills).

6. Academic and journalistic reference letters

We require a minimum of two letters of reference. Preferably you should submit an academic reference from a university official acquainted with your work (e.g. former professor, department head, dean, or faculty advisor), and one professional reference from a current or former employer. 

The reference letters should be addressed to the Erasmus Mundus Journalism Consortium. If the reference letters are not in English, they should be accompanied by a translation certified by your home institution or a certified translator.

Please ask your referees to submit the reference with an official letterhead, and make sure that it is signed. Unsigned letters of reference will not be considered.

If possible, we prefer the reference letters to be included in the application package, but if your referees would prefer the reference to be treated in confidence, please refer them to Bettina Andersen at

7. Documentation of your nationality/nationalities

Please include copies of your passport(s) to prove your nationality. If you have double citizenship, please include documentation for both.

8. Special Needs / Chronic Illness / Disabilities

Applicants with special needs or a chronic illness are encouraged to include as much information as possible regarding their situation within their application.

When will you get your application response?

Please check your inbox in March

You can expect to receive an email from the Mundus Journalism Consortium with the admission result around the 1 of March. If you are offered admission, you will be asked to confirm whether you accept the admission. We operate with a relatively short feedback deadline to be able to offer admission to another applicant if you should decide to reject the offer.

Applicants who applied for a scholarship will also be offered the possibility of self-funded admission if selected by the Consortium for admission, but not for a scholarship.

Data protection

How we treat your data

Candidates/applicants for Erasmus Mundus programmes may have their data used for the purposes of evaluating the programmes, efficiently manage the projects, and producing statistics. Data could be made available to the EACEA, the European Commission, the European External Action Service staff, as well as to other stakeholders of the Erasmus+ programme, such as Erasmus+ National Agencies, National Erasmus+ Offices and the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association. 

Please take due note of the policies by which the EACEA collects, manages and uses the personal data in the context of managing mobility projects.
