Overview
This course examines Latin American journalism and media in relation to the current context of globalization and its principal trends. It firstly focuses on the structure and functioning of the international contemporary media system and how Latin America fits and participates on it. Then it compares the principal agendas of Latin America’s media with the relevant global issues –whether there are differences in coverage, use and treatment of sources, stereotypes, and what the possible causes behind those differences are.
The course uses comparative case studies and theoretical concepts that contribute to an accurate analysis of the central problems and dilemmas concerning the exercise of journalism in Latin America, along with promoting relevant debate on the role of the Latin America media industry, its global integration and contribution to democracy.
